Vienna's Michaelerplatz: An evening with Martines and Haydn

Artistic design of the Michaelerplatz by Jennifer Kirkham

August 13th, 2021

St James' & St Basil's Church, Newcastle

Overview

Join Opera dei Lumi as they explore the music of Marianna Martines (also known as Marianna von Martinez), a prolific and widely recognised musician and composer based in Vienna in the late 1700s. Martines lived in the same apartment building on the Michaelerplatz, Vienna, as Haydn and was a close personal friend of the seminal librettist Pietro Metastasio. Featured in the programme, we will hear Martines' exciting and dramatic setting of Metastasio's famous 'Berenice, ah, che fai', a text set by Haydn, Paisiello, Gluck and Jommelli and many others, and her vivacious Sinfonia in C. Haydn's Mercury symphony will close the evening's proceedings.
